What Is Beetle Kill Pine?

Beetle kill pine comes from lodgepole and ponderosa pines killed by the mountain pine beetle. The beetle carries a fungus that stains the wood. As a result, the lumber shows natural blue, gray and silver streaks running through warm honey tones.

Importantly, the stain is only color. It does not weaken the wood. In fact, the Colorado State Forest Service has written about how finding good uses for beetle-killed wood helps forest management in Colorado.

Why people love it

No two boards streak the same way. So your beetle kill pine bed or table is truly one of a kind, and it is a little piece of Colorado.

Beetle Kill Pine Questions

Is beetle kill pine strong enough for furniture?

Yes. The blue stain is color from a fungus, not rot. Properly dried beetle kill pine works well for beds, tables and dressers.

Will the blue color fade?

The streaks are in the wood itself, so they last. A clear finish protects the color.

Is beetle kill pine eco friendly?

It puts trees that were already killed by beetles to good use, rather than cutting healthy trees for new lumber.

Can I mix beetle kill pine with barnwood?

Yes. Some customers like a barnwood frame with beetle kill panels. Call (970) 518-2883 to talk through it.
